How to use this app: a few minutes a day

ยท 2 min read

This app is built for learning a little Luganda every day, on your phone, even without a signal. Here is how to get the most out of it.

Follow the path

Open Learn and you will see the course path: seven stages, from home and family to the market and the town. Each lesson takes a few minutes. Mukasa and Nakato teach you: they show a picture, say the word, and ask you to try. Tap ๐Ÿ”Š to listen again, and ๐Ÿข to hear it slowly.

Got something wrong? No problem. Missed questions come back at the end of the lesson, so you finish with them right.

Review a little every day

The words you learn come back in Review just before you would forget them. Five minutes of review a day does more than an hour once a week. Your daily goal ring on the course path shows how you are doing.

Tap any word

See a Luganda word you don't know? Tap it. You get its meaning, its recording and a link to the dictionary. If a word is not in the dictionary yet, the app says so honestly instead of guessing.

Play, and earn cowries

Long ago, cowrie shells were money in Buganda. In this app you earn them for lessons, reviews and games: Memory match, the talking drum, Lightning round, Spell it, Sentence bridge and Market run. Spend them in the wardrobe to dress Mukasa and Nakato in a new kanzu or gomesi.

Say it out loud

On every new phrase you can record yourself and compare your voice with the recording. Nobody grades you: you decide whether it sounded the same. Your recordings are never kept.

Take it with you

Add the app to your phone's home screen, and tap Save for offline on a stage before a journey. Lessons you have opened keep working without a signal, and your progress is sent when you are back online.

A plan for your first month

Not sure where to start? The four-week plan gives you a few lessons each week, plus a game and something from Ganda culture to explore.
